For politicians, the new “it” phrase is job
creation – they keep promising they can do it when they can’t. Research is clear: government economic
development reduces private investment and job creation.
§ ”Green jobs” are costing taxpayers their own
jobs. For every
green job created, 2.2 jobs in the private sector were destroyed.
§ The
federal government spends $92
billion annually on corporate welfare. SC politicians have given away hundreds of
millions to companies they choose. SC’s
unemployment rate? One of the highest in
the nation. Per capita income rate? One of the lowest.
§ Government
interferes with the free market, creating an artificial demand that can’t be
sustained. Example? Cash 4 Clunkers.
§ Government
often gets credit for ending the Great Depression, but it actually made
unemployment higher. There
were more people
enrolled in federal jobs programs in 1938 than in any other year of the
depression. But in 1939, the unemployment rate was 17.2 percent –
higher than in 1931, two years after the initial stock crash.
§ Government
will artificially boost job creation figures by hiring more public workers. But
government can only
pay employees through taxation, borrowing, or printing money.
